Accommodations & Area Attractions Gilmer, Texas The Upshur County Library and the Historic Upshur Museum provide a wealth of information. Over 35 official state historical markers, restored early Texas homes (including two bed/breakfasts), numerous community cemeteries, and the Cherokee Trace, blazed by Indians, make Upshur County a living history lesson. Restoration of Gilmers historic downtown area has resulted in its being designated a State and National Main Street City. Each May, Upshur County celebrates Cherokee Indian heritage with the Cherokee Rose Festival. The East Texas Yamboree, held each October since 1935, and nationally known as the biggest homecoming in Texas, entertains more than 100,000 people. Christmas season is brought in the first Saturday in December with the Yulefest celebration and Santa Claus parade. There is a 76-space RV park at the Yamboree grounds. Gilmer is proud of the new 5800-sq. ft. banquet/concert arena Upshur County Civic Center, as well as soon to be completed 870-acre Lake Gilmer, on the Cherokee Trace. |
